The bark of this tree gives Charlie Tolstoy the cures she needs to stay alive: she must eat the fresh bark every three or four days or she goes into shock.
She grew up eating seaweed on the island on which she was born. The seaweed was contaminated by a leaking arsenic tailings pond on the mainland.
Charlie Tolstoy grew up diving in winters for lobster, and ate them until she found out during her radioactive tests that the lobster's meat stored mercury resulting from a cement factory on the mainland.
